An expedition under the command of M. Rogoninski, an officer of the French Navy, is about to embark at Havre, in order to explore the tract of country between the Gulf of Guinea, the Chary, and the Congo. No European lias ever visited this region, in the centre of which, according to the natives, there is a large lake (the Liba), from which the Chary and other rivers which flow into the Bay of Biafra derive their source. In looking over our files we noticed the following paragraph : —“ Mr A. VV. Price, advance agent for the Vaudeville Comedy and Burlesque Company, started for the Waikato district on Thursday last. The company open at Hamilton on Saturday, 14th, play three nights, and then goto Cambridge.” Now we have a lively recollection of this young gentleman, and, even if our memories were defective, a glance at our books would recall him to mind. It is men of his stamp who very often prevent some little leniency being shown to honest professionals who have, perhaps, through adverse circumstances, had an unsuccessful season. We have met a few of these priceless ones, but in the future will not stand them at any price. There is no paper more ready to render assistance to a “pro.” than the Standard, but we shall watch carefully not to be had again by such individuals as the agent of the Vaudeville Company the members of which we cannot compliment upon having secured “Australia’s Greatest Wizard” to transact their business. Messrs. Graham, Pitt and Bennet advertise they will offer for sale at auction tomorrow, a portion of section 141, in the Gladstone-road, containing about roods. As the property is situated between Gray and Derby-streets, it should realise a good figure, the position beiug so central, The privileges in connection with the Agricultural Society’s Annual Show are adviertised to be sold to-morrow by Messrs. Graham, Pitt and Bennett. Ab the affair is likely to be a grand success, the bidding for the gates, booths, &c., should be spirited. To-morrow will be the opening day of the Gisborne Rowing Club. The members, us will be seen by our advertising column, are requested to meet at the Boat Shed at two o’clock sharp, aud they are further requested to appear in uniform. Owners of boats are all invited to take part in the proceedings. We have no doubt that the procession of bouts will be a grand success, and w« hope that there will be a fair muster of the Gisborne people to witness it. In the case of East v. Wi Haronga heard to-day at the Resident Magistrates Court, before Mr Price, our worthy Resident Magistrate, a considerable amount of amusement was caused on hearing the defendants evidence. The claim was for £7 14» 6d, and was for luxuries supplied at a marriage feast It was not denied that those present ut the marriege feast had partaken of the “ loaves ” nor was it denied that the “ fishes ” had been duly discussed at the nuptial meal, but the defendant sought to protect himself by making out that the goods were not ordered by himself, although he admitted that he as well as his friends had partaken of the spoil. His Worship said he had no doubt on the matter, aud would gfve judgment for the full amount claimed with ousts. Messrs Graham, Pitt aud Bennett report that at the first uf their monthly cattle sales at the Waerenga-a-hika yard, there was a fair attendance, but in consequence of the dry weather there is not much demand for stock. Steers, 12 to 18 months old, £2 15s; heifers, same age, £2 5s ; beef, 12s 6d per lOOlbs; store steers, not quoted. One bull from Taranaki, £3O. Mr Short, of the Compton Hotel, Liverpool, has made the unprecedented break of 2676, consisting of 892 red hazards, all but 42 of which were made by the screw-back stroke, his own ball not being moved more • than a few iuclies»
