A petition was presented to the ActingGovernor this morning, praying for remission of the sentence passed on two young persons for indecent behaviour in the botani cal gardens. The father of the lad arrived from Wanganui yesterday to interview the Hon. the Minister of Justice on the subject. NELSON, This Day. The Motueka correspondent of the “ Colonist” writes: “Mr Stevens, M.H.R. for Rangitikei, has visited the district for the purpose of negotiating with some Native owners resident here for a large block of land at Anatori, in Collingwood, consisting of 40,000 acres. I think the block is 27 miles by 7 miles, aud the price is £lO,OOO. Mr Stoveus, who represents a Company as agent, has been so far successful as to obtain the consent of the Natives interested residing in this district, and has gone to Waitahi, Otago, accompanied by three or four Natives from here, and Mr Hursthouse, M.H.R., to obtain the consent and signatures of owners residing there. Wm. John Lyttle was again brought up on a charge of bigamy, ana fresh evidence was adduced which had been obtained since his discharge at the criminal sessions. He was committed for trial, but bail was allowed. The Harbor Board has decided to continue the present pilot service temporarily. Of two candidates for the new service the Examiners report that Captain McLeod has not experience in handling large ships and steamers. Captain Sainty put in certificates but declined to submit to examination. CHRISTCHURCH, This day. A commission agent named Hempton has disappeared, leaving behind him a crop of forged promissory notes, etc., to the amount of £lOO9. He has not been seen since Saturday. The fifth annual meeting of the Kaiapoi Woollen Company was held yesterday. Owing to the alteration of the date the balance sheet presented deals with 9 months operations only instead of 12 months as heretofore. The balance of issued shares, 1399, have all been allotted, and the expenses of floating the same written off. Considerable and important additions have been made to the buildings and plant. Eighty looms are now at work, and the mill and clothing factory gives employment to nearly 500 hands. The profit and loss account shows a surplus of £9,043 Ils 7d, out of that it is proposed to pay a dividend of 10 per cent., absorbing £5OOO ; balance to be carried forward to new account. It is probable that the electric light will be in use in the works before next annual meeting. PALMERSTON NORTH, This Day. A man named Hans Peter Nilssen, a Scandinavian, committed suicide by tying flax to fencing post, and stooping down tightening the cord, thus strangling himself. DUNEDIN, Oct. 19. The Dunedin police have intimated that they would not proceed with the charge of attempted suicide preferred against Jane Gray, on account of her low nervous state. She has been permitted to go to her home.
