40 to 10 was laid in Auckland lately that Cnnnamulla (the favorite) does not get a place in the Melbourne Cup. Prometheus has come with a rush in the V.R.C. Derby betting, he has been backed down as low as 5 to 2.
“ Tout Cela,” says : —“ Sting was a bit lame on leaving the train, having slightly injured one of his fore legs during the journey. Since Navigator’s victory over Segonhoe, he has received considerable support In Melbourne for the V.R.C. Derby at 100 to 20. The best price to be got about him now is 100 to 40.
“Newmarket” writes : —“ Navigator’s recent victories make the big double event wager of £50,000 to £2so—laid by Mr E. E. Jones, of Sydney, against Navigator for the V.R.C. Derby, and Gudarz tor the Melbourne Cup—look like a good thing for the lucky taker.” A sporting baronet a short time since in England had the audacity to take Fred Archer (the crack jockey) as his guest to a certain club in St, James’-street, London. At this there was no small indignation on the part of some of the members, to which the gentlemen remarked that Fred was a long way better off than the majority of them, as he had at the very least an income of £5OOO a-year.
