The following graphic description of the horses engaged in the Melbourne Cup emanates from tho pen of a Dunudin consultationist:— Review of the Flying Squaduonat Flemington, October, 1882. Vanguard, Hesperian, and Bosworth.
Tho performances of the lesser contingent offer a fair field, us matter of course, for criticism, and the vbgaries of such a motley assemblage afford room for much speculatiou. Act 11. i Jim Tyson, Crazy Jane, Ths Hebrew, and Brunette are discovered at Annandale, seated at an Omelette supper. Tho Footstep of I Allander is heard and a Scandal averted, hav- • ing Transferred themselves to the room of I Pollio the their friend and Liberator, On GueuuorA: entering ho was Mistaken for . Claus by Jessie the cook, who eon- | eluded that this Navigator had come as a ! Saunterer with the object of Piracy. On j discovering his Mistake she implores forgive- ■ ntss and presents him with a Crystal,* Little ■ Gem of tlio First Water, in proof of her I sorrow. — Lavinia suddenly appears and seeing Ericthoneus, her lute suullerymau, exclaims, I “ You Dare-bin hero I” Act 111. Arrival of tho Coreena, with two Wizards and a Waxworks exhibition on board. Sudden appearance of Kai Kai, Boolka, Paul, i Phoreus, and the Mulatto. These brigands, i in conjunotion with Eva, enveloped in a JTying Jib, awaited the appearance of Generals l Sacanaka, Wheatear, Martindale, Suivarrow, and Venom, whose bodies were carried off at ' the point of tho bayonet, consigned to the , Salvage bunk, and afterwards interred by I Sardongx, Cunnamulla, Segenhoe,and Gudarz. ; Tremendous excitement! tho brigands ar--1 rested by Policemen Nautilus, Sy Iv anus, i Harebell, Stockwell, Rupert, Westbury, Petrel ; Prometheus, Proctor, and Euclid. Grand Finale—Escape of the Brigands Act IV. Discovers the whole of tho conspirators assembled in the “ Trial Scene,” when Winifred ppears with her pet Golden Butterfly, having escaped the pursuit of Grosvenor, Kohtnoor, Colstoun, Iris, Gostwyck, Bagot, Gardenia, Sweet William, and Hilltop. Closing scene—representing The Rainbow cave near Belmont, in Hecla, near the Cheviot Hills. Final Tableau. Tho Judge passing sentence, as the I Squadron puss in array, to the tunc of “ See, tho Conquering Heroes Coine.”
