GISBORNE DISTRICT SCHOOL.
The ordinary monthlj* meeting of the Gisborne District School Committee was held last evening. After the usual routine business had been disposed of, Mr Hill, the Inspector of Schools, met the committee by invitation. Educational matters in connecneution with this district were then discussed. Suitable sites for the erection of infant schools were selected, after being freely discussed. There is no doubt that a suitable building will be erected for this purpose, and that a very nice site will be obtained. The necessity of a High School for Cook County was acknowledged by all present, the recent examination by Mr Hill having satisfactorily proved this—that something more than primary education is required for the rising generation of the district. A bill will shortly be drafted to bo laid before the next session of Parliament, It will be entrusted to the care of our local member, Allan McDonald, Esq., ami will doubtless have the support of several other members of the House. Ju edi probability a set of mevldknical wiki
chemical apparatus will be provided for the use of the school as soon as possible. Some assistance may also probably be rendered to the school library. Mr Hill expressed his gratification at the manner in which the Committee had performed their duties, and he was very pleased to sec that the trees hud been planted in and around the school grounds, and he hoped that shortly a suitable gymnasium would be provided for the scholars attending the Gisborne school. This is a matter which will require to be done by local subscription, and we have no doubt that the public will see their way to respond in the same generous manner as has been the case in other districts. Mr Hill expressed himself highly gratified at the result of his recent examination of the school, and he considered that every praise and credit was due to the Head Master, Mr Thomas Morgan, and his very able assistants. Several other subjects of minor importance were discussed and the meeting terminated about 10 p.m. It is understood Mr Hill that will proceed south by the next steamer.
