J BATTERY VOLUNTEERS.
: The usual monthly inspection of the above j corps took place in the Drill Shed last even- , ing. The corps, of which there was a fair | muster, fell in at 7, under the command of , Capt. Winter, and were put through half-an-j hour's drill. At half-past 7 the commanding j officer of the district (Capt. Porter) inspected the men. After the inspection the corps, | headed by their fine band, marched through ! the town as far as the paddock at the rear of | the Government Buildings, where they were | put through the firing and other exercises, to i I the satisfaction of Capt. Porter. They were i ; then marched back to the Drill Shed, and * . dismissed. We learn with pleasure that the ! Government have no intention of disbanding our local corps, as rumoured some time ; ' on the contrary, they intend re-organising ' ' the Battery, ami placing it on a mucli better 1 footing; the capitation will be raised, and ; 1 greater inducements offered, so us to enI courage men to join. It is anticipated also ' that tiie Battery will shortly be placed in ; ; possession of a field-piece. As the fit ing season is about to commence, ; two valuable cups have been presented to the , i Battery by His Worship the Mayor ami W. ! t L. The highest aggregate scorer at all ranges to have the choice of the cups as ! j winner of the Ist prize : other prizes to ' be awarded in the usual manner to the • next highest in rotation. 3rd. In addition to the points for target competition, each competitor will be en- ; titled to a point for attendance at . • parades, as follows : For every eompcti- ' i tor attending the parades of the Battery • during the month of one :
point for each parade will be allowed, and will be added to the target score, provided that no points will be a 1 lowed for less than 2 points for each month of competition. Points allowed under this section will be allotted before the final target competitions, as certain difficulties may arise in the allotment of points under the foregoing provision, and unintentional injustice done to those who may be unavoidably absent from parade. It shall be left to the discretion of the officers commanding to adjust such points, in such cases as he may deem equitable. 4tli. During the month of October a preliminary competition, open to aH members, will take place for the purpose of handicapping competitors, such competitive tiring not to exceed three, and to be fired only under supervision of an officer or non-commissioned officer, who shall certify to the correction of the score and register. The attendance at the preliminary competitive firing is not compukory, and is for the purpose of handicapping. sth. The names of all intending competitors must be submitted to Captain Winter on or before the October Inspection Parade. Competitors will make themselves acquainted with these regulations. (Sgd.) T. W.
