The case has arisen out of an inquest held on Saturday on • an infant which died under suspicious cir- [ cumstances last week. TIMARU, This Day. A man named Jeffrey Robinson has been found drowned in Saltwater Creek. His clothes were lying on the bank. At the inquest the verdict was “Found drowned;” he was about 50 years of age, and formerly worked as a shepherd. A settler named AVm. Lieshman fell between the railway carriages and the platform, at Winchester Station, this morning, and was terribly crushed from the thighs downwards; the injuries are believed to be very serious. AUCKLAND, This Day.
Robert Marsh, burglar, was committed for trial on some half dozen charges of burglary. The balance was not gone on with. The cottage of F. Sheasby, at the Three Kings, is burnt down. It was insured in the North British for £l5O. The furniture was also insured. Eighteen prisoners are awaiting trial at the Criminal Sessions. The principal cases are bigamy, unlawfully wounding, perjury, and burglary. A inee ig of ladies was held yesterday, 200 present, to protest against the enforcement of the Contagious Disease Prevention Act. A petition is in circulation and being extensively signed. Meeting of clergy convened for to-morrow. MASTERTON, This Day. The Rev. Mr Izitt, who has recently been I advocating the strict enforcement of the | Licensing Act on Sunday, has been subjected I to a dastardly outrage. A bottle of powder i was placed under his buggy in the stable at I night and exploded, but did only nominal I damage. The rev. gentleman offers £5 re- • ward for the conviction of the offender or i offenders. NAPIER, This Day. 1 Tie inmates of the Lunatic Asylum number 28—namely, 17 males and 11 females. ' There is sloeping accommodation for only j six females and 18 males. Five females and 1 two males are to be removed to Nelson next i Saturday, as the Napier asylum is only fit i for temporary accommodation, and better ■ arrongements are urgently needed. 1 The ship Mataura, now loading at the port j of London, will load frozen meat at Napier i during the ensuing season.
KUM ARA, This Day. Geo. Mansfield, a miner, yesterday slipped into the Sledge Channel, and was washed out to the mouth, a distance of .3,300 feet. He was immediately rescued from the drop, and taken to the Hospital ; he was much cut and bruised, but no bones were broken. Fortunately the men in the various claims were changing shifts at the time, or the consequences must have been fatal. CAMBRIDGE, This Day. The Land Court has commenced its session. An enormous tract of land will be brought into Court, amounting to some 600,000 or 700.000 acres, extending into the centre of the Island, from Maungatautari to Lake Taupo, including Waoru district. 'Die applicants are chiefly of the Ngatiraukawa tribe. There will be considerable opposition to the passing through Court of these large blocks of land on the part of certain Native owners, who desire to part with land only in small pieces.
