GREAT MATCH BETWEEN COOK AND ROBERTS FOR £1000.
As an outcome of the late match on an ordinary table between W. Mitchell and AV. Cook, in which the latter was victorious by 779 points in a game of 3000 up, level, tor £lOO, John Roberts challenged Cook to play him 5000 up. on an ordinary table, lor £5OO aside, and offered a start of 750. Play was slow for some time, Roberts, who had to go on i from last night, failing to make a 1 stand, and while he was scoring 39 i Cook made 210. In answer, Roberts put in 75, | bring the game to Roberts 3978 to j Cook’s 1595, but the latter was away again with 177, reaching 4872, atiH although Roberts made breaks of 20 and 34, they were of uo avail, Cook, after failing to score, in response to the former run, reaching the spot in his next, essay after scoring half-a-dozen, running to within two points of game, with the aid of the red, and finally winding up with a cannon, thus winning at 11.25 a.m. by 968 poiotein a grandly played 228, Roberts's final score being 4032. At the conclusion of the match the Prince of Wales shook hands with the players, and expressed hie appreciation of the splendid play he had witnessed.—•- “ Bell's Life.”
