The Inspector of Nuisances—Mr T. Faram—was asked last night in the Borough Council to give some information regarding the poisoning of several valuable dogs which were registered according to regulation, and were therefore entitled to run about the streets without fear of death at the hands of the dog inspector. Mr Faram gave a distinct denial to any knowledge of the matter, and thoroughly cleared himself of the imputation of having administered the poison by which these dogs died. There cannot be the slightest doubt, that whoever is the guilty person, it is not Mr Faram. Our own impression is that some one who has, what in Colonial parlance is termed a “ down ” on Mr Faram, purposely poisons dogs in the street, with the deliberate intention of the blame attaching itself, as it naturally would if not contradicted, to that officer. Whoever does this is a dastardly coward, and we sincerely hope that any one seeing a person throwing meat to a dog in the streets will at once come forward and declare it, so that an investigation may be made. Only by such means can the guilty person be arrived at ; and, if he ever is so arrived at, we sincerely trust that there may be found law strong enough to punish him, sticks tough enough to thrash him with, arms muscular enough to wield them, and the hearty good will to lay it on properly.
