SPORTING.

The added money of the Wanganui Cup has been reduced to £5OO. A racing man in Napier says I will put my money on Rangipo for the Guineas, Ruahine for the Hurdles, and Mavis or Louie for the Spring Handicap. After his victory in the Hawkesbury Handicap, Sting jumped up to first favorite for the Melbourne Cup at 100 to 8, up to which he was backed to win a few hundreds. A good many trebles have been taken in Christchurch about Cheviot, Salvage and Cheviot—Derby, C.J.C. Handicap, and Cup —at 100 to 2 ; also Cheviot, Betrayer and Cheviot at the same price. “ Tout Gela,” writes “ Although the late Hawkesbury Handicap was run in the fastest time yet done in Australia, our American cousins have beaten us twice, and on both occasions it was a three-year-old that did the trick. Hindoo, for instance, carrying Sst 61bs., covered the mile and a-half at Saratoga in 2min. 36sec., and Luke Blackburn, with 7st 41bs up, ran the same distance in 2min. 34sec.”

An amusing incident with the grand national steeplechase at Liverpool is going the rounds of the sporting circles. At one of the fences there was a tumble and a scrimmage, half a dozen horses coming to grief, In the hurry and confusion, Adams, the jockey, who started from the post on Liberator, hastly remounted and dashed home. While weighing-in he remarked, to Mi' Gregory, that the old horse had not jumped as he used. Gregory asked what old horse he meant, and and he made answer that it was Liberator of course ; whereupon he was informed that it was not Liberator but Ignition. While the amazed A dams was admitting that he had mixed liis horse, home came Liberator, ridden by the jockey who had started on Ignition. The occurrence resembled those mistakes frequently made in exchange of hatsand umbrellas, with this difference, that the owner of the best article didn’t lose by the swop.
