SPORTING.

[By Tklegbaph.J DUNEDIN, This day. At the parade of entire horses yesterday, Mr Harry Goodman’s racehorses Sir Modred, Somnus, Hilarious and Idalium were brought on the ground with the object of selling them by public auction, in order to dissolve partnership. Great interest was taken in their disposal. Sir Modred was first put up and stopping into the ring in the pink of condition, a bid of £5OO was immediately offered. Brisk bidding speedily ran him up to £BOO, and at £Bl2 he fell to the nod of Mr George Fenwiok, who was acting on behalf of a principal. Somnus, also looking healthy and well but showing signs of having been blistered, started at £350, and at £402 was knocked down to Mr George Dowse, who also acted for a principal. Idalium, a handsome black, brother to Mir Modred, did not elicit much speculation, and he was speedily knocked down to Mr Mortimer for £65, and the same gentleman purchased Hilarious for £65. “ Pegasus ” the sporting contributor of the “ Evening Star ” published a review of the past racing season last night. Auckland heads the list of provinces In number of meetings, and amount of added money, namely : 65 meetings and £10,727, Canterbury ia next with 37 meetings and £7,765 ; Otago, 53 meetings and £8,710 ; Wellington, 33 meetings and £8,685. The principal winner for the year is the late Mr W. Waltersj of Auckland, with £3.228, Robinson and Lance i*ank next with £2,580, Tho horse Which I

won the largest amount of money was Grip, with £1,455, Slander Filly second with £1,155, Lady Emma and Clarence next with £1,020 each. Traducer heads the list of winning sires, Ravensworth 2nd, Albury 3rd and Yattendon 4th.

By the courteous invitation of Messrs. J. R. Scott and J. and A. Davis, we paid a visit to the race-course at Makaraka the other day, and were agreeably surprised to find that a perfect course has been comcompleted ; not, we' might add, without siderabie expense to the initiators of the project. The course, which is a perfect oval, gives a clear run of exactly a mile, and the whole running is necessarily comparatively a straight. The grand stand is situate in a position which commands a good view of the course from start to finish, and never allows the horses to be lost sight of. A track about 30 feet wide has been ploughed up, and is now being laid down in grass and harrowed ; and without the slightest doubt will shortly present the appearance of a well grassed and pretty course. In the centre of the oval will be laid down a ground for cricket, football, and other athletic sports, which will supply a much and long-felt want to the youthful athletes of Poverty Bay. Taking into consideration the convenient distance from town, the facilities afforded by it to working people for enjoying a holiday at a reasonable cost, the nature of the course, which is a dead level, and all other advantages presented by this new bantling of sporting interests, we think it would be wise if the Poverty Bay Turf Club could be induced to change their venue, and hold their meetings at Makaraka. We would like to invite discussion from racing men and others upon this subject. In the mean time we congratulate Messrs. Scott, aDvis, Weston, and others upon the successful result of their efforts in the interests of the racing community of Poverty Bay.
