If we remember rightly one of the clauses of the specifications in connection with the contract for lighting the street lamps was that they should be kept clean in order that a decent light should be given. We have repeatedly been asked if this is done, and honestly, from personal observation, we can assert that it is not carried out. The lamp on Read’s Quay this morning was not only dirty, but also we noticed one of the pane* had been cracked.
14 Ourabi,” or “ Arabi,” should be accented on the second syllable; at least so a 44 New York Tribune’ r reporter was told by the Turkish Minister in London. This gentleman seems to have been an excellent specimen of the “unspeakable Turk,” for it is stated that he was wily enough to dodge all the questions and turn the tables on the reporter, literally interviewing him. He declared he knew but little of the Egyptian question, but what he did know he did not gather from the London Press. This astute minister, should he ever visit New Zealand, will probably discover that in the Colonies most of the reporter* are as smart at gaining information, and should necessity reauire it retaining it, as the Turkeyist Turk of the Sultan’s dominion.
