(per united press association. ) WELLINGTON, This day. A large and brilliant comet between south and east was visible hero at 4.15 this morning. The comet has a large head pointed towards the earth and is lost sight of about 5 o’clock.

The Captain of the Jane Douglas which arrived from Foxton last night, states that the ketch Recamia which was loaded in Foxton river and ready to sail for Lyttelton, sprang a leak on Saturday and had to be beached. The Recamia is owned in Lyttelton. Her cargo of timber, about 40,000 feet, is insured in the National Office for £2OO. Information was received from the Harbor master at Patea yesterday, to the effect that the steamer Wakatu had gone ashore about 150 yards distant from the entrance to the Patea river. No particulars as to the steamer’s position have been received, but it is understood that she is not likely to sustain serious injury. The Wakatu left here for Patea on Saturday afternoon and took a large neneral cargo which will have to be discharged before any effort can be made to launch her. Captain Beudall, Secretary to the Underwriters’ Association left here for Patea by this morning’s coach to superintend the work of securing the vessel’s safety. The Wakatu is insu-'cdin the South British Office for £4OOO, but the greater portion is reinsured. Nominations by the outgoing mail are for 1145 souls, and the amount paid by friends is £3047 10s. The following are the numbers from each district: —Auckland, 192 ; Taranaki, 8; Hawke’s Bay, 73; Marlborough, 2; Wellington, 110; Nelson, 21; Canterbury, 323; Otago, 313; Southland, 87; Westland, 8. Of the above 441 are single women, 223 single men, and the remainder are families.

At tho banquet in tho evening the Mayor presided. ASHBURTON, This Day. Tho Directors of the Ashburton Woollen Factory have sent homo by the outgoing mail an order for £6,000 worth additional plant for factory. Mr Ramsden, late of tho Kuiapoi factory, has boon appointed manager. Operations at the factory start in about ten months time.

HOKITIKA, This Day. A woman named Ellen Galloway, wife of tiie master of tho Harbor Board dredge, was missed from her home on tho South Spit on Friday at about U p.m. She appears to have got out of bed and walked into the creek, tor her footprints were traced to the water. The body was recovered on Saturday, and an inquest will be held to-day. t CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. W. Wilson, a farm laborer, was found drowned in the river Styx yesterday. H. Leach, 10 years, has been arrested on a charge of stabbing his brother Robert, aged 14, in the leg with a pen-knife. Captain Anderson of the banpie Wild Wave reports that last Monday when passing the coast between Catlius River and Nugget Point he noticed on shore what appealed to

be a large vessel with foremost and mizzen- I mast only standing. He was at a consider- , able distance and cannot speak positively. | Both himself and his chief officer agreed that the vessel had all the appearance of having lost her main mast mast and of being ashore somewhere near False Inlet. INVERCARGILL, This Day. The body of an infant was found at South Invercargill yesterday ; it had been placed in a box which was buried two feet down. The discovery is due to a dog which called attention to the spot by scratching and refused to leave. The body is clotted and had a cap on. The box and its contents were removed to the Hospital. The police have a clue to the matter.
