The House met at 2 p.m. The amendments made by the Legislative Council in the Trustees, Executors, and Agency Company’s Bill were agreed to. Replying to Mr J. G. Wilson, Mr Rolleston said the Government would, when there was a sufficient quantity of land open under the leasehold tenure clause, the same to be notified in England. Replying to Mr J. C. Brown, Mr Rollestou said the Government had already taken a first step towards giving effect to the recommendation of the Goldsfields Committee on the petition of Jos. Ferris and others. Replying to Mr J. C. Brown, Mr Rollestou said the vesting of the Waipori Commonage in local trustees would be equivalent to vesting it in a valuable tract of land in a few persons, as there was no local body at Waipori. Replying to Mr Bracken, Mr Rolleston said the Burvey chain-ien we c paid from 7s to 10s per day, and he had no reason to suppose that they did not consider that enough. Replying to Mr Connolly, Major Atkinson said he was not able to say what steps would be taken in the petition of Messrs Brownlee and others re erection of a wharf at Havelock. Replying to Mr Duncan, Mr Johnston said a platform station would be erected at Waitaki South. Replying to Mr Tomoana, Mr Johnston said compensation would be paid for land taken for railway purposes at Kekerama Block. Replying to Mr Tomoana, Mr Bryce said as no further step had been taken by the complainant the caveat would be removed from the Ontaranui Block, in Hawke’s Bay. A resolution was adopted on the motion of Major Atkinson, that Government business take precedence on Thursday. The Counties Act was further considered in Committee. Clause 14 was reached without amendment when the House adjourned at 5.30.

At the evening sitting in the House the Committee on the Counties Act Amendment Bill was resumed, when the various clauses were passed without any substantial amendment, and several new clauses were added. A proposal to have the County Chairman elected by the ratepayers, and to hold office for three years, was lost by 32 to 19. A proposal forbidding County Chairmen to receive salary was lost by 34 to 29. The Bill was reported as amended. The New Zealand Inscribed Stock Bill, Rabbit Nuisance Bill, Sheep Act Amendment Bill, and District Railways Act Amendment Bill were all read a second time.

The House adjourned at 12.40 until 2 p.m. to-day.
