Barlow denies having fired shots at himself, and states it was impossible that he could have bribed a Native as was stated, as he only had £5 with him. Discovery of GOLD at Wairoa WELLINGTON This Day. The “N. Z. Times’” Wairoa correspondent telegraphs that gold has been found up the Wairoa river, some distance above Te Kapu settlement. The pebbles are water worn quartz impregnated with gold, but the locality where it has been found is not known to the public, being kep« secret. The finders are very reticent, and there is considerable excitement in the district over the discovery. The Tararua Disaster DUNEDIN. This day.
