Barlow denies having fired shots at himself, and states it was impossible that he could have bribed a Native as was stated, as he only had £5 with him. Discovery of GOLD at Wairoa WELLINGTON This Day. The “N. Z. Times’” Wairoa correspondent telegraphs that gold has been found up the Wairoa river, some distance above Te Kapu settlement. The pebbles are water worn quartz impregnated with gold, but the locality where it has been found is not known to the public, being kep« secret. The finders are very reticent, and there is considerable excitement in the district over the discovery. The Tararua Disaster DUNEDIN. This day. The Government is understood to be in communication with the Union Steam Ship Company with a view to raising a fund by private subscriptions among the friends of those lost in the Tararua, to provide for proper care of the Tararua Cemetery. CHRISTCHURCH. This Day. At a meeting of creditors in Alfred Thompson’s estate yesterday, an assignment was refused and the estate will now go into bankruptcy. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company report under date London 4th., “ The wool competition is increasing aud the market decidedly firmer. Fine crossbred has advanced to Id per lb. 93,000 have been sold up to date of which 4(1,000 bales were taken for export.
