Poverty Bay Standard. Published Every Evening. WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 30, 1882.

In consequence of the great demand made to-day upon our space we have been obliged to shut out the leading article aud several other items of interest. The East Coast correspondent of the “N. Z. Herald ” has evidently suffered at our hands. We are unable to find the paragraph he refers to as objectionable, but we have no doubt it exists. At any rate if it does not, it ought to. His remarks are complimentary, but nevertheless untrue. Mr J. Warren, the Secretary to the Loyal Gisborne Lodge of L0.0.F.M.U. notifies that the regular monthly meeting of the Lodge will be held this evening, at 8 p.m. at the Lodge Room in the Good Templars Hall. Owing to several other meetings being held last night, the advertised meeting of the Horticultural and Floral Society was adjourned until Friday next the Ist September, at the same time and place, viz., the Good Templars Hall at 7.30 p.m. We are pleased to learn from Mr William Ratcliffe, the enterprising agent for the Mutual Insurance Company, that he has joined in the holy bonds of partnership with Captain C. W. Ferris. The style of the new firm will be “ Wm. Ratcliffe and Co. ” and their business will be carried on in Mr Ratcliffe’s temporary office in the Gladstone Road, and will combine Land, Estate, and General Commission Agency; Marine and Life Insurance ; Speights Dunedin Ale Agency ; Ffrosts Rubber Stamps, &c., tea., with Licensed Land Broking, under the Land Transfer Act. The firm are also Licensed Native Interpreters and Land Purchase Agents, as well as being Certificated Accountants in Bankruptcy. Both these gentlemen are so well and favorably known, and their abilities so clearly recognised in this and other districts, that on the principle that “ Good Wine needs no Bush," it becomesthoroughly unnecessary for us to dilate upon their many sterling qualities, or business capacities ; suffice it to say that the energy displayed in so successfully placing the snares in the Mutual Fire and Marine Insurance Company, is in Itself a guarantee for the success of the new firm, to both and each of which we tender our hearty wishes for their mutual success, The Rev. J. J, Lewis will deliver tomorrow evening at the Wesleyan Church at 7.30 p.m. i an amusing and instructive lecture entitled “ Rambles with a knapsack." The Rev. J. 8. HUI will occupy the chair, These are the right steps to take towards pro. viding amusement and instruction for the people, tending as they do to keep their minds and pockets equally from waste,

A notification appears elsewhere that tenders are invited for the formation of 8 miles of track in the Pouawa and Kaltl Districts, Full particulars may be obtained on application to Messrs Dennison and Grant. We extract the following from the Auckland Crown Lands Board report of their last meeting i—Cook County t The Clerk of the Cook County Council requested the Board to open certain lauds under the Homestead Act —The Minister of Lands thought it undesirable to deal with these lands, and it was agreed to send a copy of his letter to the applicant. The Natives just now between this Bay and East Cape are suffering much for want of food. The chief article of diet, kumaras, owing to bad storage and constant rain, have perished. Very few potatoes are grown on the coast; fish, kuinara, and pork being the principal articles of consumption. The storekeepers beyond Tologa aie unable to keep a sufficient stock of flour, the Natives having had to resort to this article. One storekeeper took over the counter in two weeks this month over £350 for provisions only. There is no lack of money, owing to considerable amounts having been paid away lately for land. We have heard of over six hundred signatures having been obtained to one deed. Last night Mr Brewer, the proprietor of Stereoscopal Panorama, although having several disadvantages to contend with, secured a number of visitors, each and all of whom expressed themselves as being pleased at Woodraski’s panoramic exhibition. For ourselves we can certainly say that the scenes are well painted, and give apparently excellent representations of the various scenes they depict. One of the great features in connection with the show is a hand organ with nine automatons who, to the music of a most accomplished organist, apparently live, move, and have their being much to the delight of the children and interest of adults. Mr Price, who is connected wish the exhibition, succeeded last evening in doing something which many people would like to do—he discovered two shillings in the possession of a reporter. The latter was thoroughly ignorant of the fact that attached to his beard there was a florin. Had he known it—well it will be possibly more charitable to think than to assert. Some of the tricks exhibited were extremely clever, and the professor of legerdemain not only astonished but elicited the approval of all present. Mr Bell is very anxious to discover the whereabouts of his pocket-book. Persons knowing anything of the matter are requested to call on him at Mr M, Hall's (saddler) shop. The pocket-book contained money and cheques,

Messrs!'. W. Carr and Sous’ call attention to a final notice emanating from them requesting immediate payment of their outstanding claims, which must be paid to Mr D, Malcolm Orr without delay, to save legal proceedings, Mr Love, the advance agent for Wnodyear aud Ross's Royal Australian Circus evidently means business, This show is a most attractive one, and promises a great treat to the Poverty Bay public, The journals of the respective towns through which they have travelled speak most highly of the performances, ami judging from the account, of the crowded houses they have secured, Messrs Woodyear and Rosa must have hail a prosperous ami remunerative tour. The show combines the feats of 30 of the premier artists of the day as gymnasts, equestrians, acrobats, aud contortionists. These performers are all persons of tried and recognised talent ami should, in conjunction with the high training of the horses, the tricks of the performing ponies and the general surroundings of an extensive aud well regulated circus, succeed in drawing large house, in Gisborne. The circus will open here on Monday September J Ith. The prices charged for admission being very moderate -, viz : 4s ami 2s 64 for adults, and 2s and Is fid for children. The enterprise and energy of the proprietors, ami their indefatigable agent, certainly deserves to meet its reward in pecuniary success.

The French Government is making preparations to send out an Antarctic expedition to Cape Horn. M. Mascart, the head of the Bureau Central, has been communicated with fur the appoiutinent of meteorological ami magnetical observers. The expedition will be fitted out for a period uf 18 mouths.
