Poverty Bay Standard. Published, Every Evening. SATURDAY, AUGUST 26, 1882.

We have not the slightest objection to the “ Herald ” growling at our criticism of their leading article of the 23rd instant. Li fact we rather like it; but we do protest against the “Herald” attempting to read us a lecture upon language. Dear old “ Herald,” she’s enough, at any time, to make Lindley Murray rise up from his grave in solemn protest; but when she takes a member of Parliament to task for shortcomings that he has not been guilty of, she should not tell him that he “might have had the foresight to see” possible events in the political future. Our arguments certainly do not show Mr McDonald to be “ all powerful ” in the House, we only wish they did ; but we certainly think that the “Herald” has drawn largely upon imagination for the £60,000 which it delusively shadows forth in dim expectancy to its hungry disciples, and we really do think, the “ Herald’s” assertion to the contrary notwithstanding, that we have shewn this £60,000 to be a myth pure and simple. We say this more in sorrow than in anger, for equally with the “Herald” we deplore the impecuniosity of the district, but not being such true believers as they are we sorrowfully acknowledge our unbelief. But, as Captain Tucker would say, “Is it fair ” that the “ Herald ” should wither us, scorch us, sit upon us, and so utterly annihilate us because we have bowled them out in a little political fib ? And such a little one ! We hide our diminished head, and, like that sagacious bird the ostrich, fondly imagine that we completely shut out our pursuer. Well, age before honesty ! And considering that the proprietor of the “ Herald ” wrecked the Ark on Mount Ararat we acknowledge the old lady to be a trifle older than ourselves.
