Mails for Napier, per Oreti, will close this evening (Saturday), at 7 o’clock.

The Auckland Star of the 19th instant says :—“ Mr W. Ratcliffe, land and commission agent, has purchased a building site, situated between the Albion Club Hotel and the N.Z.L. and M.A. Company’s site, Gladstone Road, Gisborne. The price paid was £1450, or at the rate of £33 per foot. Business in Gisborne must be looking up.” A meeting was held at the Library last evening for the purpose of forming a Dramatic Club in Gisborne. It was decided that the name of the Club be ‘ ‘ The Gisborne Library Dramatic Club,” and to consist of working members. The following were elected officers for the season : —President, His Worship the Mayor ; Vice-President, Mr W. F. Crawford; Manage)’, Mr M. H. Smith; Sub-Manager, Mr J. Bourke; Secretary and Treasurer, Mr E. H, Pavitt. It was decided to give five performances, the first to take place in four weeks’ time in aid of the funds of the Library. A set of rules were drafted and adopted for the guidance of the Club. We heartily wish the Club success and can faithfully promise them that we shall endeavor to render them every assistance.

Mr Fraser, manager for Mr D. M. Orr, has now commenced active work in connection with the steam corn, bran, and oat crushing portion of the business recently received by the latter gentleman. The arrangements are perfect and no doubt ample satisfaction will be given to all who patronise the firm.

There was only one case for hearing this morning, viz. : Police v. A. Morton, for indecent exposure. After hearing the evidence His Worship sentenced the defendant to 7 days’ imprisonment in the Gisborne Gaol.

By advertisement it will be seen that tenders are called for the erection of a large billiard-room and other offices, at the rear of the Argyll Hotel. Thursday next, the 30th inst., is the day fixed on which the tenders will close. The plans and specifications are now on view at Mr Finneran’s office.

The Oreti is advertised to leave for Napier at 8 o’clock to-morrow morning. Those persons whose lands or holdings which are liable to Hooding from the Waipaoa river, are requested to attend a meeting to be held on Thursday next, the 31st inst., at the Makaraka Hall, for the purpose of considering the proposed protective work. It is to be hoped there will be a good attendance.

There exists in Gisborne a most prolific goat . notwithstanding Borough by-laws. Within the last few days she has given birth to four kids. This is a most unprecedented performance, and whilst congratulating the goat upon her achievement, we feel sorry for the owner of the animal. Goats are goats, and bye-laws made by the Borough Council are bye-laws, and the'unfortunate possessor of this wonderful animal may not feel altogether happy. Tne Secretary of the Ormond Quadrille Party notifies that an extended programme will be given on Wednesday next, the 30th of August.

The Secretary for the Poverty Bay Agricultural and Pastoral Society announces in another column that the annual parade of stallions will take place on Saturday, the 9th of next month ; aftei which a meeting of the society will be held in the Masonic Hotel, the business of which is important, and it is to be hoped there will be a good attendance.

Messrs Graham, Pitt, and Bennett notify in another column that they will offer for eale, on Wednesday next, at noon, some good beef, fat store pigs, a good milking cow, &c.

The programme for the annual tea meeting and soiree, in aid of the Wesleyan Church appears to-night, and from what we can see a most enjoyable evening may be expected.
