[Reuter’s Special.] LONDON. August 17 The Australians commenced a match today against a United Eleven of South England at Portmouth. The weather was very fine, and there was a large attendance of spectators during the day. The Home team went first the wickets, and where all disposed of for a total of 196 runs, The highest scorers being Mr C. F. Johnston who made 43. The Australians then commenced their first innings, and at the close of the day’s play had scorced 27 for the loss of 1 wicket. Blackham contributed 16 and is not out. The Prince of Wales, accompanied by the Princess and family, have left England for Wiesbaden, Germany, for the benefit of His Highness’s health. August 18. In the House of Commons last night an excited debate took place regarding the sentence passed upon Gray, M.P. for Carlow, for publishing in the “ Freeman’s Journal” an article reflecting on the judges and jurymen engaged in the trial of an agrarian murder. The experiment of issuing rations of frozen Australian mutton to the British force en route for Egypt has proved most successful.
