CORRESPONDENCE.

[IPs do not hold ourselves responsible for opinions expressed by our correspondents.’]

TO THE EDITOR. Sin,-—ln reference to your report on the Southern Cro»s Oil Company and “Fair Play'* " letter, I bog to say that many year# ago I procured and used the oil for my carfame, and the same I got on the surface of the ground near Awanui. The site I presume is now the Company’s ground,—l am, etc., M. Bound. 10 THE EDITOR. Sir,—Allow mo to correct an erorr that ap. peered in your issue of last evening, viz I paid no forfeit of £lO to Mr Win. Proffitt, as I did not know him in the matter, but to Mr J. W. Nolan, with whom I arranged the match, and to whom, when I found my maro was ill, I tendered the stakes, viz,, £lO. Ho refused, saying that we would have the match another time, which was very courteous of him, but only what I expected from Mr Nolan, as I liad postponed the match liefore for his convenience. On Monday Mr Nolan informed me that Mr Proffitt claimed the whole of the stakes—not Forfeit mark you, for there was no forfeit apoken of, the match being of a friendly nature. Why I know not, but he never went over the course and I told Mr Nolan that I thought it was an extortion, and he agreed with me, but I in a weak moment told him that if he had to pay the £lO, I would hold him covered, and on his producing Mr Proffitts receipt for that amount, I, not liking to go back on my word, handed him over two £5 notes. You will therefore see that I paid no forfeit, but was mulcted for the whole stakes, and nothing but tlie stakes. Perhaps tide may elucidate matters as regardu the beta, ioid an to

my standing in the matter —I did not funk the match, and it had only been postponed. Mr Nolan told me that as the owner of “My Pony ” was going to Dunedin, he would not be able to let his pony run a match and that was one of his reasons for claiming the stakes, in contradiction of which statement however I see in your issue of last night a challenge for the One Hundred Pounds.—l am &c. M. H. Smith.
