SPORTING.
Mr J. Berry, Captain of the Gisborne Football Club kindly informs us that he has received a telegram from Napier to the effect that the Napier team will leave that place for Gisborne on Saturday next. The Gisborne Club pick their team to-night. A sporting challenge appears in our columns. Mr William Proffitt declares himself willing to trot his chesnut mare “My Pony,” against Mr M. H. Smiths “ Shooting Star ” sixteen miles, giving “ Shooting Star ” a mile in that distance, for £lOO, the course to be hereafter fixed, the only stipulation asked being, that it shall be a “ fair trotting course.” Mr Smith paid £lO forfeit to Mr Proffitt, yesterday, for not meeting him with “ Shooting Star ” in the trotting match which had been arranged between that horse and “My Pony,” for Saturday last. There appears to be some little feeling about this forfeit, but as the two principals are thoroughly able to fight their own battles, we don’t see that we have any concern with it. (By Teleobaph.) Palmerston North, Aug. 16th. The Jockey Club last night prepared a programme for Boxing Day meeting. The principal events are : —Handicap Hurdles, of £6O ; Maiden Plate of £4O ; Manawatu Handicap of £2OO ; Ladies’ Purse, 150 sova, added; District Handicap of £OO ; Flying Handicap of £5O ; Consolation of £25. Total amount of prizes offered, about £5lO. All races open except the District Handicap which is confined to the Manawatu County.
