The Gisborne Library Chess Club.

A meeting was Jheld in the Library Rooms yesterday evening, for the purpose of forming a Chess Club in connection with the Library.

On the motion of Mr Kenny, seconded by Mr Finn, Mr Greenwood took the chair, and in a suitable speech opened the proceedings. Mr Kenny proposed, “ That a Chess Club be formed in connection with the Library,” and spoke at some length on the advantages of the pastime, and explained the working of some clubs of which ho had been a member, The proposition Mas seconded by Mr Sigley, and carried, The gentlemen present then signifiod their intentions of becoming members. It was decided on the motion of the Rev. Mr Hudson, seconded by Mr Finn, “That the Club be called ‘ The Gisborne Library Chess Club..’” Mr Greenwood was elected President and Mr Robinson Hon. Secretary and Treasurer for the first year, and it was decided that the winner of tho first prize in the tournament during the year, should be the President for the year ensuing. It was decided on the motion of Mr Finn, seconded by Mr Matthews, “Thatthe Committee for the management of the Club consist of five members, including President and Secretary.”

On the motion of Mr Matthews, seconded by Mr Finn, Mr Kenny, Rev, Mr Hudson, and Mr Sigley were elected members of the Committee for the ensuing year. It was decided that the entrance fee be 2s 6d, and the yearly subscription Is ; and that for non-subscribers to the Library the entrance fee, be 5s and yearly subscription 2s, payable in advance. It was also resolved on the motion of Mr Kenny, seconded by Mr Fisher, “That an annual general meeting for election of officers, &c., be held as near as may be to the 15th August in each year.” It was arranged that the Club meet on every Thursday evening, or other such days as the Committee may decide from 7.30 to 10.30 p.m. The Committee having power to extend the hours if necessary. A vote of thanks to the Chairman terminated the proceedings. a The following gentlemen then handed over their entrance fee and first yearly subscription !—Mr Matthews, Mr Fisher, Mr Kenny, Mr Greenwood, Rev. Mr Hudson, Mr Finn, Mr Robinson, Mr Sigley, Mr Nairn, and Mr Judd.
