Poverty Bay Standard. PUBLISHED EVERY EVENING, TUESDAY, AUGUST 15, 1882.

The s.s. Oreti is announced to leave Auckland on Thursday afternoon next for Gisborne. Messrs Leonard A Co., announce that they intend to sue for all moneys duo to them not paid before tho 21 at inst. Certainly the flrm has been long-suffering. In passing Mr W. K. McLean’s office to-day wo noticed n very handsome Gordon setter pup bountifully marked, and showing a great, dual of quality, Infiur advertising oUnmns wt* notice tho pup i« for sale, and no doubt it will be s cured by suiuo of our local spurtsmen.

A children’s concert in connection with the Government School, is to be held on Wednesday evening, the 23rd inst., in Parnell and Boylan’s Hall. The children who are to take part in the singing portion of the entertainment have been carefully tutored Mrs Bach and Mr Bull, the second master of the Government School, and rumor has it that one or two musical treats are to be afforded to us by some of the young ladies who are to make a first appearance. Mr Montague H. Smith has coached up some of the boys attending the school, and has hopes of producing a most amusing farce with the talent he has under his control.

A special meeting of the parishioners of the Holy Trinity Church is called for Thursday evening next. The business is announced to be “ To take into consideration the building of a parsonage.” The new Argyll Hotel will be occupied on Thursday by Mr T. J. Dickson who announces elsewhere a desire that all His friends as well as the general public will between the hours of 12 and 1 on that day partake of his hospitglity. Mr Dickson’s kindness and attention are so well-known that we feel certain he will hare a number of guests. All we are assured will be made welcome. We congratulate the genial host upon the fact of the new premises rapidly approaching completion, and that shortly he will be the landlord of a large and commodious hotel. Credit is due to the contractor, Mr C. D. Berry, for the rapid manner in which he has pushed on the work. J. K. Emmet was doing good business with “ Fritz in Ireland ” at Haverley’s California Theatre, San Francisco, up to the time the mail left. Levy and his cornet have been appearing in the Southern States of America. Very many great improvements have been made in Porter’s hall, and it is now eagerly sought after by those who are desirous of indulging in the mazy dance. The lighting has been greatly improved, eight lamps having been added. The seats, instead of the ordinary forms, are now comfortably padded ■etees, rendering even the general unpleasantness to a lady of being a “ wall flower ” almost enjoyable. A very fine piano has been specially imported, and Mr J. K. Scott, who has taken up his residence in Gisborne, now being open to engagement for dances, there can bo no doubt the hall will be in constant request. It has been deemed unnecessary to hold an inquest upon the dead body of the native discovered at Ormond on Sunday morning, as it was evident he had died through old age and exposure, His name we have learned is Tamoti Kanga, and he is said to be fully 90 years old and very childish. The deceased led a wandering life, travelling from one relative to another, and had a custom of lying down and sleeping wherever ho might be when nightfall overtook him. When discovered he was completely destitute of clothing, and simply had an old delapidated blanket around him.
