REMARKABLE RECOVERY OF A LOST SHILLING.

WheX a boy eleven years of age there resided at Marston, near York, with his parents, Thomas Hudson, who captured a cuckoo, which he sold for a shilling. This being the first shilling he possessed he was anxious to preserve _ it, and for this purpose he deposited it on the top or one of the old spars in the roof of his father’s house. Here he thought it would be secure, but it somehow disappeared. A few years later Thomas was engaged by Messrs Swan and Clough, the York bankers, in whose services he remained for upwards of 4U years, ut the expir-

ation of which he was allowed a pension of £2O a year. Unfortunately for him his income from the above firm ceased through the liquidation of the bank ; but by his careful habits he had saved enough to keep him comfortable at his native village. A few days ago he observed some workmen taking the roof off the old house where he deposited his first shilling. Relating the story to the workmen, he asked them to take pains in removing the old spars in the hope that the coin might yet be found. The workmen complied with tho old man’s wishes, and very soon one of them found the shilling, and removing it from the place in which it had lain for 69 years, handed it to Mr Hudson, who received it with great glee.
