ROUGH PASSAGE OF THE ATALANTA
The Atalanta, Captain Bradley, which arrived here on Saturday last, had a rather unpleasant passage with a strong northerly wind, and off the Mercury Islands was running under double-reefed foresail and mainsal, and shipping large quantities of water. One sea struck the schooner, which started the covering board and some of the seams, causing the vessel to leak considerably—in fact the pumps were kept constantly going up to the time of arrival. When this disaster occurred the schooner was close under Cape Runaway. The s.s. Oreti was passed off Hicks’ Bay on Friday last at half-past 8 a.m. The East Capo was rounded on Friday, and here another sea •truck her which carried away some of the staunehions, and nearly 10 feet of the bulwarks. She arrived in Gisborne at daylight on Saturday and came into the river about 1 o'clock in the afternoon.
