The current odds on the Melbourne Cup are 100 to 5 on the field.
Cheviot and Nonsense are strong favorites for the C.J.C. Derby. The value of the Derby Stakes, [won by Shotover, was £4,800.
Sardonyx was handicapped for the last Melbourne Cup at sst 71b j this year he has to carry Bst 31bs. Hereford Bay has been backed for a bit, at 1000’s to 30 and 40 for the Melbourne Cup.
The Melbourne Cup has been won six times by a three«year-old, four times by a four-year-old, five times by a five-year-old, four times by a six-year-old, and only twice by a aged horse.
Prometheus, whose Melbourne Cup weight is 6st 71b, won the Victoria Cup at the recent S.A. Jockey Club meeting. He is by Tubal Cain, out of lairline, and, when in Christchurch some time ago, his owner refused an offer of £2OOO for him.
On comparing the weights for the Melbourne Cup as telegraphed with those appearing in the Melbourne papers, several slight errors are brought to light. Wheatear has Bst 81b, not Bst 91b ; Morpeth 6st 101 b, not OstJ 111 b ; Dunedin 6st 81b, instead of Ost 91b ; and it is not “ Banquet,” but Baronet, that is in the 7st 111 b dtvision.
According to Benson’s chronograph, Shotover won the Derby in 2min 45 3-sth sec. Darebin’s odds, 100 to 3, certainly appeal** to indicate that such is his owner's intention.
Concerning Golden Butterfly, Augur writesi —I don't think I've ever seen a finer specimen of the thoroughbred than Golden Butterfly, a two year olason of Tubal Cain and Calumny.
