The. principal point adduced was Winiata being seen to enter Packer's room an hour before the finding of the body, and Packer was heard to exclaim to him, “Hullo! what do you want hero ?” It is reported from Alexandra that Captain Gascoigne, in charge of tho A.C. there, has been warned that should the Constabulary go to Pirongia to cut firewood, they will be in danger from Winiata’s friends. A Maori named Kaitepuko is believed to have committed suicide by jumping overboard from the Maburangi at Mongolia!. He was in low spirits through alleged irregularities of his wife.
Sergeant McGovern has secured an important witness in Winiata’s case, a half-caste named Clement Newton, to whom Winiata confessed the circumstances of the murder at Kuitiin 1880. Giltnor, Postmaster at Raglan, took down the half-castes statement at tho time of his having told that gentleman of 'Winiata’s conversation. The written statement is now forthcoming - . Nothing is known as to how she got into tho water, but it is thought as she was subject to fits she may have fallen off the breastwork. An inquest will be held. This is the last case of the criminal calendar. In the Magistrate’s Court, William Raltrajg Clerk in tho Natives Reserves Department, was committed for trial on two charges ef embezzling monies the property of the Government. The evidence went to show that two sums of £27 10s and £l3 respectively for rent for Native reserves had been paid to accused and not accounted for. Bail was allowed, himself in £lOO and two sureties £5O each. By proclamation in the Gazette kerosene and any distillate of petroleum will in future come under the Dangerous Goods Act, 1869, irrespective of their standing the fire test of 110 degrees Fahrenheit.

The fund subscribed on behalf of the Kitchener family has reached £520. It has beon raised privately, and mainly by voluntary subscriptions. It will bo invested on behalf of Mrs. Kitchener and family. Bills, a well-known bird dealer was arrested yesterday morning when walking ashore from the steamer Bowen with two or three boxes of fancy Chinese goods and charged with evasion of Customs duty. He was admitted to bail till "Wednesday next.
