LICENSED VICTUALLERS’ MEETING.
A meeting of licensed victuallers wa4 held at the Masonic Hotel, afternoon, at 2 p.m. Mr A.. Graham in the chair. Present: Messrs Dickson, Cannon, Joyce, Devery, Johnstone, Crawford, Adair, Murray, Milner, Allanaoh, Scott, Page, Mullaoly. The Chairman opened the meeting in a few brief words, explaining its object, viz., the consideration of tne Licensing Act, 1881, with a view to necessary alteration. Mr McDonald, M.11.R./had written to ask that this meeting should be called. The Goteminent had done wrong in proclaiming this district under the Native Licenses. Mr McDonald asked for suggestions as to necessary alterations, Mr Dickson moved, and Mr Devery seconded, that rhe Bill be read by the Chairman. The Chairman then p'ro--4 ceeded with the reading of the Act. j Mr Crawford suggested that the / words “ Good Templar " be added tp" clause 11’ Clauses 17 and 22 were objected to as pressing unjustly and injudiciously on this district. The power of the Assessor should simply be equal, and by no means superior, to that of his colleagues. A 23. Ruka Tarata, Honi MoEena, Wanta Tukina are Natives holding licenses in Waiapu district. 28. Subsection 3 of clause 28 to be struck out. 41. Objected to as far as posting notice of application is concerned. 44. Subsection 5,8, 15, of clause 44 objected to. 55. To be expungod. 56. Requires alteration, being cumbrous and expensive. Mr Crawfofd pointed out the injustice of charging a feo of 5s or 8s for registering appl • eatiou fur license.
61. To be expunged. 63. Requires revision ; adjudicators should not act as ebjectors. 61. Objectors should pay their own costs. 67. The word “ quarterly ” to be substituted for “ annual.” 70. Licenses should be paid for on issue. 75. Objectionable and should be expunged. 78. Objection the same as 70. too much arbitrary power and should be expunged. 84. Unequally applicable and should be expunged. 107. Six months too short « time. 108. Should ce altered to £4O for 12 o’clock, and £3O for ten o’clock licenses, and £2O for country licenses. 134. Should be struck out. 136. Is objectionable. 142, 143, 144, 145. Do not attach to Licensing Act—belong exclusively to Vagrant Act. 146. The words “ knowingly and wilfully ” to be inserted before permit. 154. That a clause be inserted allowing hotels to be open on Sundays from 1 to 3 and from J past 7 to £ past 10 p.m. 168. Objectionable. 170. Sould be expunged as preposterous. 172. Objectionable—should be expunged. 174. Objectionable. 175. Objectionable. 197. Hard labor to be expunged. 204 to 211. Struck out as applicable only to criminals. 219. Notices should be served personally. Mr Dickson moved, and Mr Joyce seconded, that a Committee consisting of Messrs Page, Crawford, and Joyce, be appointed a Committee to draw' up these resolutions and forward them to Mr McDonald, M.H.B. The Chairman suggested that Messrs Scott, Mullooly, and Milner, consider the Native Licensing proclamation and and form the necessary remonstrances. Both propositions were carried nem. fen. The meeting concluded with a vote of thanks to the Chairman,
