The JVcto Zealand Herald gives an interesting account of the capture of Winiata The affair was planned entirely by Sergt. McGovern and Constable Gillies, who took Barlow, the half-caste, a powerful fellow, standing over 6ft. in height, into their conscience, supplying him with the funds necessary to the safe conduct of their project, out of their own pockets, the authorities being kept in total ignorance of the plan. These two officers have established a high claim upon the Government for recognitioh of their services, and it is to be hoped there will be no delay in paying over the reward of £5OO for the capture of the murderer. Thsre was also an additional reward offered by the friends of the murdered man, but we forget the amount. Winiata denies any share in the actual murder, and says it was planned and executed by a half-caste named Harry, who escaped to the Bay of Islands, and that he (Winiata) fled, fearing that he might be charged with the desd. The King Maoris seem to be rather relieved by the fact of Winiata’s arrest, but ]is relations, who are a bad lot, have vowed vengeance against Barlow. Winiata was lodged in the Auckland lock-up on Wednesday evening. He will be fried at the Criminal Session at Auckland, commencing July 12th.
