Nelson, June 16. Accounts from the country districts report that the gale on Wednesday night was accompanied by a heavy flood. The flood was the heaviest known since 1877, when much damage was done. In lower Motueka the flood is pouring through the windows of the Bridge hotel. Horsemen found it impossible to cross tho bridge. Auckland, June 16. The Annual Ploughing Match of the Auckland Agricultural and Pastoral Association at Mangero yesterday
was well attended. There was a good competition. The result of the Franklin North election so far is—Harris, 524 ; Buckland, 470. One return has yet to come in, but it will not alter the result. Christchurch, June 16. A certificate of gold medal was awarded yesterday at the Exhibition for samples of Petroleum to the Southern Cross Petroleum Company, Poverty Welltnoton, June 16. The steamer Australia with the May English mails left San Francisco for Auckland on the 4th instant, one day later than the time table date. The steamer City of New York with tho May Colonial mails arrived at San Francisco from Auckland on the 13th instant, two days earlier than time table date. A letter has been received from Reynolds," the New South Wale’s sculler, to tho effect that he is willing to row Hearn for £lOO. Hearn is quite willing to accept the challenge, and allow Reynolds £25 expenses should he come to Wellington. It is probable that the match will be arranged. Arrangements are being made for the Hinemoa to take the members of both Houses of Legislature to Canterbury in order that they may visit the Exhibition. The proposal is to start to-day (if the Colonial Treasurer continues too ill to bring down his budget) or else on the following Friday, returning on the Tuesday after.
