TELEGRAMS.
(from our own correspondents). AVei.lington, May 31. Tho warrant for tho execution of Hiroki has been signed by llis Excellency the Governor, and will be forwarded by to-morrow’s steamer to the Sheriff, New Plymouth, with whom will then rest the power of fixing the dale for tho iulliction of the law’s last penalty on the murderer, who has too long evaded the due punishment of his crime. Mr Read, the Governor of WcllingGaol, has been instructed to proceed to New Plymouth, taking with him the apparatus used eight months ago for hanging Tulii, the murderer of Miss Dobbie. It is probable Hiroki’s execution will take place next week. Auckland, Juno 2. Williamson’s Opera Company are doing good business at the new Opera house. Tho schooner Flora arrived from Tahiti, bringing information to the effect that fears are entertained in the South Sea Islands that the French Governments are about to take possession of the Harvey Group. French war vessels arrived recently at Rurutu and Rimatara, with the object it is supposed of hoisting their colors there. To this fact the alarm is attributable. A telegram was received from Wellington last night, dismissing first-class detective Farrell from the police force, presumably in connection with the ease recently heard before the Thames R.M., as a result of which Farrell was fined £5 and costs. Dismissed officer has been a policeman for 34 years, and always has borne a reputation of being an efficient and conscientious officer, llis dismissal will create considerable sensation at the Thames, where Mr Farrell is deservedly popular.
