DUNEDIN BIRTHDAY MEETING.
Dunedin, May 25. The Dunedin Jockey Club’s Queen’s Birthday meeting was very well attended, and fine weather favored the meet ing. The principal race of the day was the Birthday Handicap, which resulted in a grand race between Sir Modred and the Envy filly, the former’s victory being very popular. Three totalisators did a good business. The police did not interfere with sweeps. The results were : — Handicap Hurdle Race, of 60 sovs.; distance, miles. W. H. Taggart’s Robin Hood, Ost 101 b ... 1 J. Alien’s Little John, list, 2 C. Hobb’s Mokarakara, Ist 51b 3 —Haricot, lOst 101 b, and Wild Boy, lOst 71b, also ran. Cloud fell at one of the hurdles and was killed, Iris jockey escaping unhurt. Rubin Hood won with ease. Mattirk Plate, of 40 sovs.; distance, one mile and a quarter. Hon. G. McLean’s Legerdemain, Bst 51b 1 P. Butler’s Te Ata, 6st lib - G. Cutts* Amora, 8s t 31b 3 —Clinkernia aud Spray also ran. Legerdemain was a strong favorite, aud won easily in a common canter. Birthday Handicap, of 100 soys. ; distance, 1 mile and a half. H. Goodman’s Sir Modred, Bst 121 b, ... 1 Hon. W. Robinson’s Envy filly, 6st 101 b 2 G. Bates’s Poet, 6st 81b ... 3 —Adamant, 6st 131 b, and Legerdemain, 6st 51b, also started. This was an excellent race between the two first horses. had accepted for the race, and not being officially scratched, Mr Butler was fined £5. The Envy filly was most fancied on the totalisator. Trotting Race, of 50 sovs. ; distance, three miles. Mr Nicholl’s Bandall, 3 years, 65secs. ... 1 There were twenty starters, of whom Mr Vezey’s Tiger, with 55 secs., was the favorite. Bandall, however, kept his lead to the finish. In one of the totalisators there were only 8 investors on him out of 244. Time, 4m. IDs. Novel Race a handicap of 80 sovs ; one mile and a distance ; the winner to be sold and the proceeds to go to the club. Mr Hungerford’s Jasper, 6st 101 b 1 J. Stephenson’s Eugeine, Bst 101 b 2 There were nine starters, Eugeine being the favorite. Au excellent race was won by Jasper by a length. A dividend of £5 was paid on the totalisator. Time, 2mins. 19sec. A protest was entered on account of Eugeine being jammed on the rails by Jasper, but it was dismissed. Tradesmen’s Handicap, of 60 sovs ; one mile and a distance. P. Butler’s Luna, Bst 21b (Derritt) 1 Hun. W. Robinson’s Envy filly, Gat 131 b ... 2 —TI e Poet, 6st 9ib ; Redcliffe, sst 121 b, also ran. Luna, who was a strong favorite on the totalisator, won with ease at the finish. Time —2 mins. 11 secs. Consolation Handicap, of 40 sovs; distance, 1 mile. G. Bates’ The Poet, 7st 121 b 1 Four others started, and the race was run almost in the dark. Won easy.
