GRAND NATIONAL STEEPLECHASE MEETING.
Christchurch, May 25. The weather yesterday was beautifully fine for the Grand National Steeplechase, and the attendance at the racecourse was very large. Eight, went to the post for the principal event of the meeting, the Grand National Handicap. Sailor Buy and Quamby had the call in the betting from Clarence, the only other barked to any extent being Why Not, who, however, refused early in the race. The following are the events : — New Zealand Grand National Handicap, of 300 sovs. ; distance, about 4 miles. D. Christie’s Katerfelto, lOst. (Cliffoid) .. 1 J. Pilbrow’s Clarence, 12st 101 b, (Lunn)... 2 Butler’s Quamby, list 51b, (T. Lyford)... 3 —Sailor Boy, 12st 101 b ; Why Not, list 71b ; Young Sledniere, list 51b; Mousetrap, lOst 31b, also ran. Shortly afterwards Sailor Boy fell and broke down, and the rest were then henceforth out of it, except Mousetrap, Quamby, Clarence, rfclto. Mousetrap had enough when aiW from home, and from that the race was confined to Quamby, Clarence, and Katerfelto. The three rose together at the last fence, but Quamby was soon in trouble, and Katerfelto seemed to have the best of it till Lunn sat down on Clarence. Clifford then had to ride Katerfelto, and a grand race ended in a short head victory for Katerfelto, Quamby a bad t ird, Mousetrap fourth. The time was nut taken, but it was undoubtedly a very fast rare. The winner was trained by Dan O’Brien. Maiden Plate, of 150 sovs.; distance, about, 2 miles. H. Lunn’s Canard, list. (Lyford) 1 W. D.
