Mr Ivess addressed a large meeting of AVakanui electors in the Town Hall last night and received a vote of thanks and confidence unanimously. N The election takes place on the 9th June. Auckland, May 23. Pakara and Epiha, brought up at the Police Court yesterday on a charge of shooting at Dalby McWilliams with intent to kill, were remanded till the 31st inst., to get the neeessarj witnesses. Christchurch, May 23. A special meeting of the shareholders of the New Zealand Shipping Company was held at noon to-day, when it was resolved, after a long discussion, by 21 votes, to increase the capital of the company from £250,009 to £1,000,000. The Hon. J. T. Peacock, recently one of the directors, was principal opponent of the proposal. The attendance at the Exhibition up to Saturday night was 117,478. The application for a Prohibition Order under the provisions of the Licensing Act made at Christchurch R.M. Court yesterday, the evidence was conclusive as to the habitual drunkenness of the man complained of, and the sale of liquors to him had been prohibited for one year. A similar ease was heard at Lyttelton Police Court, and an order granted. The Alagistrate expressed his intention of dealing as severely as possible with any infringement of the order. Wellington, Slay 23. A meeting of the Opposition members was held yesterday, Air H utchison in the chair. Air Macandrcw stated that the meeting was called by Mr Montgomery and himself for the purpose of conferring on matters essential to the proper conduct of the business of the House. It was essential that the party should agree to unite under the leadership of some one member, and he was prepared, if required, to propose a name as leader. It was then suggested that the principle of union under one leader should be affirmed ; but on account of a number of members not having yet arrived in Wellington, it was inexpedient to proceed totlieiniraediateelection of such leader. This was agreed to, and a resolution was moved by Air Alacandrew and seconded by Air Montgomery, and carried, that one recognised leader be appointed for the party, and that the election take place as soon as possible after the arrival of the absent members of the party. Messrs AV. J. Stewart and J. C. Brown consented tp act as Opposition Whips until a leader was appointed. Writs for Franklyn North and Wanganui have been issued. The elections will take, place on the 9th of June, and the writs returnable on or before the 30th of June. H.M.S. Nelson is expected to arrive here next week, and it is thought that Sir Arthur Gordon will make his visit to Fiji in her instead of in the Aliranda.
