Queen’s Birthday Race Meeting. President: Allan AlcDonald, Esq., M.H.R. Judge: W. F. Crawford, Esq. Starter: E. R. Bloomfield, Esq. Clerk of the Scales: Al. 11. Smith, Esq. Handicapper: Peter Breingan. Clerk of the Course : Albert Pritchard. Stewards: G. L. Sunderland, J. B. Poynter, A. AleKenzie, 11. Sherratt, and AV. K. Chambers. Esqs. Yesterday being Her Majesty’s birthday was, as usual, observed as a general holiday throughout the Colony, and the nature of the day was rendered apparent by the groups of people gathered about in knots in the princi pal thoroughfares in ready waiting for the appearance of the breaks and other vehicles of public convenience which were advertised to start at stated hours. The day was a eold and raw one. Notwithstanding this, however, n very enjoyable day was passed. Credit is due to the stewards and officers of the meeting for their praiseworthy energy in catering for the amusement of the public. AVe would, however, point out, what doubtless was an oversight, that the reporters of neither paper were provided with lunch. As they have very little time to look after themselves they are dependent on the officers of any Race Meeting for little attentions such as these. AVe have no doubt that it was an oversight, but it was unpleasant for the sufferers. The Totalisator was not overburdened with supporters. Mr P. 11. Bourke, the able and energetic secretary to the Racing Club, was übiquitous. The bell rang for the first race at 12 sharp. The following are the results of the events of the meeting : — Handicap Hurdle Race of 30 sovs. ; 2 miles, over eight Hights of hurdles. G. Burnand’s Luck's zlll (Honor) 1 T. E. R. Bloomfield's Lizard (Redman) ... 2 C. Waldron’s Seagull (Gordon) 3 M. 11. Smith’s Roebuck 0 Four horses came to the post for this race, Morning Star being scratched. Luck’s All was the favorite, although Roebuck had a few fanciers. They all got away to a good start, Lizard leading, hard held, for the first mile, Roebuck lying second. After a mile and a quarter had been traversed Luck’s All went to the front, and Seagull made an effort, but soon fell back Roebuck was by this time completely baked, and pulled up half a mile from home. Luck's All now had a good lead, and won easily, hard held; the Lizard running second, whipping hard. There were 12 subscribers at £1 each on the totalisator, of whom four were on the winner; the dividend declared being £2 3s. Hack Hurdle Race of 10 sovs., for all horses that have never been trained ; weight, 9st; 1 mile. M. G. Nasmith’s Gundagai (Brimner) ... 1 P. Malone’s Slim Jim (Honor) 2 N. Ruru’s Tuhuia (Redman) 3 Rangi's Cray (Maori) ... 0 Gundagai was fancied for this event, although Slim Jim had a few admirers. A good start was effected ; Gundagai at once took the lead, and was never once passed ; Slim Jim second, whipping hard. There were 23 investors on the totalisator, 10 being on the winner, and a dividend was declared of £2 Is. Maiden Plate of 15 sovs.; weight for age; 1| mile. A. McDonald’s Squire (Carrington) 1 J. Trimmer’s Blue Jacket (Dolman) ... 2 T. E. K. Bloomfield’s Mabel (Farrell) ... 3 A. McDonald's Hatred Colt ... 0
Four horses faced the starter for this event. Mr Profitt declared to win with Squire; AVild Dayrell was scratched. There was a slight dispute about the weights, which delayed this race for a short time, but it was soon rectified. The Squire was very fractious at the post, which caused a very bad start; the Squire, getting the best of it, led all the way, winning hard held, Blue Jacket running second, and Alabel third. The Hatred Colt ran last, a long way in the rear. Air Profitt (the trainer) then ordered the jockey to ride hitn round the course again, to get the colt used to the crowd. There were 17 investors on the totalisator, 12 being on the winner, a dividend was declared of £1 ss. Flying Stakes Handicap of 20 sovs.; distance J mile. A. McDonald’s Squire (Carrington) .... 1 A. McDonald’s Hatred Colt (Harries) ... 2 J. Bradlev’s Rosemary (Maher) 3 T. E. R. Bloomfield’s Lizard... 0
Kani Peri’s Hero, G. Burnand'o Cat, and D. Page’s Morning Star were scratched for this race. Lizard declared 2|lbs overweight, and Hatred colt declared 41b overweight. Rosemary was a fresh horse for this race, and was in consequence roost favored, although a few pinned their faith on the Squire, who justified the confidence placed iu him by taking the lead and winning, hard held, Hatred colt second, Lizard and Rosemary nowhere. There were 11 on the totalisator for this race, 5 being on the winner; a dividend was declared of £1 19s. Birthday Handicap of 30 sovz.; top weight 9st: 2 miles. D. Page's Morning Star (Carrington) ... 1 G. Burnand's Cat (Darrell) 2 F. Carden's Carnival (Farrell) 3 C. Waldron’s Seagull (Harries) 0 Kani Peri’s Hero (Honor) 0 Five horses came to the post for this race, Mr. J. Trimmer’s Blue Jacket and Mr. A. McDonald's Squire being scratched. Morning Star was most fancied. This horse, when stripped, reflected the greatest possible credit upon his trainer. Jack Brimner; He seemed as fit as a fiddle, and proved that with care and attention, he is the horse his plucky owner fancied. The Cat also had a good many admirers. A good start was effected, Carnival taking the lead for three-quarters of a mile, when tlie Star came up, closely followed by the Cat; the pair then ran neck and neek for a quarter of a mile, but the Cat had to give way to the big horse, as the ground was very heavy. The Star eventually won by half a length, the Cat a good second. This was the best race of the day. The Cat was most fancied on the totalisator, 15 being on hitn. There were 39 investors at £1 each on the totalisator, 11 being on the winner, which declared a dividend of £3 3s. Hack Race of 5 sovs.; catch weights ; 1 mile. M. G .Nasmith’s Gundagai (Harries) ... 1 Karaiwinia (Maori) 2 P. Breingan's Progress (Darrell) 3 Three others started for this event, they all got away to a good start Gundagai at once took the lead and won easily with Karaiwinia second. There were only two investors on the totalisator in this race, and a dividend was declared of 18s. Consolation Handicap of 10 sova.; 1 mile. G. Burnand’s Cat, 7«t 71b (Darrell) ... 1 J. Tummer'e Blue Jacket, fist 121 b r 2 Kani Bst (Maher) 3 J. Bradley's Rosemary, Gst. 121 b (Harries) 0 The Cat was a het favorite for this event, and justified the confidence placed in him by winning easily, although had Mr. Trimmer’s Bine Jacket carried bis proper weight, the tables would have been turned, as lie ran a good horse, considering he had never been trained. The rest were nowhere. There were eight investors in the totalisator, 4 being on the winner ; a dividend was paid of £1 16s.
