BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The Borough Council met as usual on Tuesday evening last. Present: His Worship the Mayor, Councillors Lewis, Whinray, Townley, Tucker, Clayton, Brown, and Somervell. Correspondence in and out was read, the item of most interest being a letter from the Colonial Secretary’s office, stating that on receipt of certain information as requested, the sum of £lOO would be given as a first progress payment in aid of the fever ward of the Gisborne Hospital.—The resignation of Captain Ferris as Returning Officer was received and accepted.— £5O was, on the motion of Cr. Whinray, seconded by Cr. Somervell, voted for the use of the Fire Brigade.—Mr Nolan wrote accepting the appointment of Borough solicitor, and a retainer of £lO 10s was ordered to be forwarded to Air Nolan.—A letter from the Commissioner of Crown Lands respecting the forwarding of three Crown grants to the District Lands Registrar was then read and acknowledged.—ln accordance with a request from Air Shrimpton, posts and chains for holding horses was ordered to be erected at the Post Office.—A letter from the Harbourmaster recommending that wharf charges be legibly shown to publie view was met by a resolution that the same be painted legibly in the wharf-house window.— Air J. R. Alorgan wrote forwarding an estimate of his probable loss, £153, by the proposed alteration as marked by the Engineer in the boundaries of Nesbitt-road. The letter was referred to Mr Nolan for his consideration. The Engineer’s report on the Waihirire water scheme was read, and it was resolved that the opinion of the ratepayers should be taken at a public meeting to be held on Monday, sth June. The Engineer by modification of his Waihirere plan reduces the estimate of cost considerably, and brings it in round numbers to a sum amount-
ing to not quite £20,000, as compared with the more expensive scheme of £33,000, the difference laying principally in the comparative cost of a large and small main. The report is lengthy and the schedules replete with information, which we shall quote at length in a future issue. At present our space will not afford us the opportunity. The schedules are four in number, and total as follows: —No. 1, £33,242 ; do. modified, £25,231: No. 2, £21,622; do. modified, £18,874.
