To-morrow being Hie Queen’s Birthday the Telegraph Office will only be opened once, viz., Il) to 10.30 a.m.
The following tenders for the erection of the Argyll Hotel were received by Mr W. P. Finneran, architect, and opened on Saturday last: —R. Holden, £2,653; Harries and Lincoln, £2, 410 ; J. Forbes, £2,184; C. 1). Burry, £1,760. The tender of Mr Berry being the lowest was accepted. A Football Match took place on Saturday afternoon last in Captain Tucker’s pa block on the Wuikanae, between the town and country teams. Play commenced at 2.30 o’clock, after a few minutes it was easily observed that the country possessed the strongest teain, and soon proved it by obtaining three *• tries ” against the town’s two. Duringthe game the weather was anything but pleasant, showery at intervals, and blowing a S.E. gale. It was a good game, and afforded great amusement for both sides.
At the evening service at Holy Trinity Church on Sunday evening last, during the singing of the hymn commencing “ A few more years,” our respected citizen Mr M. JI. Smith was suddenly taken ill and fell down in a fit. He was immediately carried out into the Vestry by Mcssrt Rees and E. K. Brown. Dr. Pollen was immediately in attendance and used restoratives. A very considerable emotion resulted, causing one or two ladies to go into hysterics. We are glad to say Mr Smith was quite well yesterday. The service was very impressive throughout. The Rev. Mr Hill made reference to tiie sudden death that had occurred during the week. There was a celebration of Holy Communion after the evening service at which the Ven. Archdeacon Williams was the celebrate.
Mails for Napier and South per Southern Cross, will close this (Tuesday) evening at 7 o’clock. Notices of application for accommodation Licenses are inserted in this mornings issue by Thomas Fox for the Tokomuru Hotel, Tokomaru, and Hone Mokena for the Kuwa Kawa Hotel, Kawa Kiwa. On Sunday morning last a fire broke out in | the residence of 'r W. Miller, Grey street. I The fire originated in a draught hole between the bricks and the woodwork, and hut for t e energy displayed by one or two residents in the neighborhood, would have been completely destroyed, together with the adjoining build- j ing. The Fire Brigade arrived promptly on 1 the scene with their engine, and rendered i good service in extinguishing the Hames. The i house is insured in the Norwich Union Com- ' pany for £3OO, and belongs to the Bank of , New South Wales. Mr Miller estimates the damage to his furniture at about. £’O, which is covered by insurance. \fter t >e fire was extinguished Mr A. Robb, with commendable : forethought, placed two of his horses at the ; disposal of the Biigade to draw the engine' back to the sued. Mr Miller, elsewhere in this morning’s issue, returns his thanks to those persons who so energetically helped him to put out the fire. We desire to call attention to an advertisement of the New Zealand Copying Company and Portrait Agency published elsewhere, T n‘s Company has been established for the purpose of providing the public with strictly accurate and beautifully executed portrait pictures of themselves, their wives, children, parents, relatives, and friends, alive or dead, the only necessity in the case being a tolerably executed photograph of the individual, details of the other necessary particulars in writing, and uf course tl e money indue course. Specimens of the work of the company are on view at Messrs Adair and Adams’s, including portraits of Mr Adair himself, Miss t’arr, Miss Jones, Mr E. Lewis, ami two very benutifu ly executed portraits of a little b >y and girl, children of Major Mair of the Mairs of Waupari. We do not know that we can say anything more in favor of these portraits, except that they are simply beautiful and the price so reasonable that every family in Gisborne should be able to afford the luxury of being duly “done” in oils or watercolors. Mr Henry Clayton, the representative of the Company, is to be met with for a few days only, at the Albion Club Hotel, or at Mr Bishop’s Pharmacy.
