CABLEGRAMS.

[from our own correspondent]' London, May 16. The May and June series of Colonial wool auctions opened to-day with a catalogue of 6,100 bales. There was a fair attendance of buyers, and the bidding was marked by good spirit, the closing prices of last auction being well maintained. The series will close on the 4th July. In to-day’s sale Merinos were in request, and a demand was experienced for lots of that description on the catalogue. The Cricket Match, Australians v. Oxford University, was resumed to-day. The Home Team continued, and the first innings closed for 189 runs against 362 of Australians. Shaw contributed the highest score, 78. The University men followed on with their second innings, and when the stumps were drawn had put together 119 runs for four wickets. There was a large attendance at the match. The Australians met with a cordial reception when they went into the field. Their bowling and fielding during the day were excellent. May 17. In the House of Commons last night the matter of an alleged understanding between the Government and Parnell with regard to the latter’s release was under discussion. Several Conservatives re-affirmed the truth of statements which had been current regarding a compact between Parnell and the Government, and denounced the covenant as utterly infamous and degrading. Gladstone, in reply, hotly denied the truth of the assertions, and challenged pijoof of the alleged compact. The police to-day effected the arrest, at Liverpool, of ten men on board an outward bound steamer to Egypt. It is believed that the capture has been made in connection with the assassination of Lord Frederick Cavendish and Mr Burke. Mr George Otto Trevelyan, the newly-appointed Irish Secretary, was

elected for Hawick without opposition. The Cricket Match, Australians v. Oxford University, was won to-daj by the Australians by nine wickets. At the wool sales to-day 10,600 bales were offered. Port Phillips wools are languid, and small quantities were withdrawn. Sr. Petersburg, May 16. News is to hand of the death of General Kauffman, commander of the Russian army, in Turkestan. Cairo, May 16. It has transpired that, acting under the advice of Foreign Consuls, the Khedive has patched up an agreement with his Ministers, and the crisis which was imminent has thus been averted. May 17 It has transpired that the Foreign Consuls, acting under instructions from their Governments, will demand of the Khedive that the Egyptian army forthwith be disbanded, and rebellious officers be banished. It is stated that in view of the present position of affairs, the Turkish Government will probably despatch the fleet of ironclads to Alexandria. Adelaide, May 19. The police have impounded the sum of £7OO found upon the defaulter Harjes. The question has arisen whether the same should be available for the Adelaide or N.Z. creditors and the amount has consequently been handed over to the official receiver. New York, May 17. The steamers of all the Atlantic lines are now carefully searched by the police on their arrival here, with the view of discovering the Phoenix Park assassins.
