SPORTING.

We would call the attention of owners and trainers, and others of the sporting eomiuunity whom it may concern, to certain alterations in the programme arranged for the Makaraka Race Meeting, to take place on the 29th inst. In the Roseland Slakes, the winner of the Waerenga-a-hika Birthday Handicap is to carry a penalty of slbs. Nominations for the Handicap Hurdle Race, Roselaud Stakes and Shorts Handicap must be sent sealed, accompanied by entrance and qualilic ition money, and description of the horse to the secretary, at the Roseland Hotel, at Makaraka, not later than 8 p.m. to-morrow (Friday), 12th May, 1882, and no entries will be received after that time, unless by post, letter, or telegram, bearing the same date. A very enjoyable meeting is anticipated, as the subscriptions have come in handsomely. Mr Albert Pritchard will officiate as Clerk of the Course. (froji exchanges.) The Canterbury Jockey Club have removed the disqualification from W. McKay, jockey, Mr (jr. G. Stead has promised the Canterbury Jockey Club a 100 guinea Cup for the next Autumn meeting. Mr E. E. Jones, the well-known bookmaker, of Melbourne, has laid 50,000 to 250 against Navigator ami Gudarz for the next Victoria Derby and Melbourne Cup. A six days’ go-as-you-please took place lately at Geelong, between the well-known pedestrian Edwards, and the trotting horse Conquering Hero for £lOO aside, ihe horse won easily, ile travelled 431 j miles, and Edwards 423:c miles.

“ Memo,” the sporting editor of the Sydnei/ Mail, has been presented with a handsome gold watch and a valuable ring, the results of a subscription among his sporting friends, in recognition of his remarkable success in “ tipping ” the winners at the late A.J.C. Autumn Meeting. It should be mentioned that the amount of individual subscriptions was limited ; therefore, the testimonial represents the good feeling of a large number of “ Nemo’s ” friends.
