[From oca own CouußsroNnsNTs]. Auckland, May 1. The mail steamer Zealandia arrived to-day. O’Brien, the pedestrian, attempted the feat of running 75 miles in twelve hours on Saturday. He covered 65 miles 17 laps, and attributes his failure to ill health and smallness of hall. Mastebton, May 1. News was brought in this morning of a dreadful death by fire of a man and his wife and children at the Whareama ferry. The man’s name is Smith, and has been ferryman for many years. No one knew of the fire till a person going by discovered the remains of the building, and the man and wife ; the body of the child was found on the hill side, where the dogs had dragged it. Cabtebton, May 1. The Wairarapa Jockey Club have endorsed the disqualification passed on Murtagh bv the Hawke’s Bay Racing Club. Mastebton, May 1. A man named Arenga was killed at Woodlands, Tauera, by the falling of a tree on Saturday. The body was brought into Masterton for an inquest to-day. Nki.soS’, May 1. Thomas Dodson, juri., landlord of the Black Horse, Wakapttaka, had his lower jaw blown off by a gun this afternoon. It is said that he saw a hare on the hillside near his home, and ran to fetch his gun, which by some means went off, inflicting the injury mentioned. Christchurch, May 1. Numerous e ntrieshave been received for the Exhibition Athletic Sports on Saturdav next.

| Another instance of larrikinism ocj eurred on Saturday night. Eour larrikins set upon two men, beating them ; severely, striking one behind the ear with a heavy stone, knockinghim down, 1 aud causing serious injury to his ear.
