Another Narrow Escape from Fire.
At about 6.30 p.m. on Sunday last, and while the Church bells were ringing, the town was alarmed by the fire-bell ringing out lustily. The composing room at the Herald office, which is in the rear of Messrs Carlaw Smith and Co.’s offices, and opens out into the small right-of-way between that building and Mrs Browne’s shop, was observed to be in flumes. Assistance was speedily at hand, and the flames were soon extinguished. The fire was evidently the work of an incendiary, who seems determined to have that block burned in one way or another. On this occasion there was no great damage done, although the walls un; der the lining were badly charred. Another five minutes and the Herald office and the whole of that block, must inevitably have been burned. Luckily it was observed in time. Mrs Weaver first gave the alarm, and Messrs Sinclair, Smith, Gannon, and other gentlemen were immediately to the fore. The origin of the fire has not been traced, but there seems no room to doubt that it was an incendiarism.
