A kind of “hole in the corner ” enquiry was held yesterday afternoon at the Custom House as to the cause of the s.s. Te Anau striking some time back. We doubt the legality of these proceedings, and are quite sure that they cannot tend to the public welfare. The Reporter of the Herald went down, as well as ourselves, for the purpose of recording the statements which might be elicited, and was informed by Mr Christ, the Harbour Master, that the proceedings, forsooth, were private !! ! We do not intend that they shall be kept from the public knowledge, and, if necessary, shall request to be furnished with the requisite information by the higher authorities. If there is nothing to be ashamed of, why keep the proceedings private ? Is it that the rock in question, just discovered by Rawhiri Macky, should have been found long ago, or what does it mean ?
