OUR ORMOND LETTER.
[from our own CORRESPONDFNT.J The grazing land at the present time looks excellent; grass feed in abundance in all parts. The roads inland appear excellent—from town to Ormond never bettel’.
During a short trip inland I noticed the improvements made to the Kaitcratahi Hote 1 !, placing it second to none as far as quality of liquor, cleanliness of house, and, last but not least, economy in charges made by the present popular proprietor, Mr David Dinan. Talking about hotels, I am sorry to have to record the departure of one of our best bonifaces, viz., Mr John Maynard, from the Chandos Hotel, who intends, I believe starting in his old trade in Gisborne as a butcher. I feci sure he has the best of wishes from the Ormondites in his fresh vocation. Dame Rumor reports we are likely to have a Telephone branch between here and Gisborne. This will be the most useful addition, with the extension of a tri-weekly mail, which has been granted to us by the Government, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays; the Post Office and Telephone are to be under the able management of Mr P. Barrie, merchant, of this district. Lately we have had an addition to our community by way of a baker in the person of Mr S. Liddle, and Mr McCoombe as shoe and bootmaker. Mr laddie’s bread I fancy cannot be beaten in quality and weight, as he appears to have a large amount of custom about Matawhero, Makaraka, and surrounding districts. Since the Easter Encampment, the Ormond Volunteers are quite eager for drill instruction and firing practice. I believe they have procured a Range, and firing practice has already taken place, under the superintendence of Sergeant S. C. Caulton, in the Government Valley. A dance is to take place at Bruce’s Hall on Friday next, when undoubtedly there will be a large attendance. The Ormond Road Board have several contracts on hand, to be tendered for not later than May 4, 1882, when undoubtedly there will be a keen competition.
