E.M.’s Court, Gisborne.

Thursday, April 27. [Before M. Price, Esq., R.M.j A. Allanach was charged with having allowed billiards to be played on his licensed premises at an unlawful hour, viz., a quarter to one o’clock on the morning of the 23rd inst. Defendant pleaded not guilty. Mr Rees urged as extenuating circumstances that defendant’s billiard-room was let to another person, whose duty it was to shut up the room at the proper hour. Mr Allanaeh had done so himself on more occasions than-one. He hoped the penalty would be light. His Worship said this was the first offence of the kind under the new Licensing Act which had come before him, and ho should commence by imposing a fine of £5 and costs £1 Us. He trusted thia example might, serve as a deterrent, as he was determined to enforce

the full penalties in cases of'contravention of this Act, which he considered a good and necessary one. William Barton Charged with larceny of a hat the property of Messrs Teat and Fryer, was remanded for three days. Assault wIIh Intent. At 2 o’clock, Henare Paro, was charged by Mounted Constable Currie with assault with intent on a Native girl, aged 9 years, at Mangat u, on the 20th inst. On the application of Sergeant Bullen prisoner was remanded until Friday week, sth inst. Friday, 28th April. Thos. Connor was brought up on remand, and discharged on a certificate from Dr. Polleil of hrs recovery from mental aberration produced by drinking chlorodyne. Arson. John King, master of the “Venus,” was charged with arson, in setting fire to the Albion Club Hotel, on Friday morning, 28th inst. Remanded until to-day. Bail being allowed in two sureties of £lOO each. Waihopi v. Ruru. Mr Brassey for plaintiff ; Mr Nolan for defendant. Claim, £l5, value of a horse sold to defendant. Plaintiff acknowledged receiving £9 on account, and now 'claimed the balance £6. After hearing evidence the Magistrate gave a verdict for defendant with costs, £2 7s.
