(from our own correspondents). Auckland, April 20. A young man named Webber, a 'naval storekeeper at the North Shore, was drownefl while towing in.a.dingy attached to the ferry steamer. He was only married a few months ago. A contract for the first section of the Cambridge-Hamilton Railway was signed yesterday by .Messrs Alercer and Marshall who were the successful tenderers at £'6,122. An inquest was commenced yesterday -afternoon, at- Alauutahi, ten miles from here, on the body of a Native woman, found dead on the road. It is alleged that there was a public-house row, during which the Native received a blow on the head with a heavy stick from Gallagher, landlord of the Alanutahi Hotel. The Native went off on horseback, but was subsequently found dead a mile or two on the road. The inquest was adjourned till Alonday, because the -Natives throw .-difficulties in the way by refusing to allow uposf mortem examination, and though the Native Aluiister has been requested to order such an examination, no reply ■ has. yet been received from him. . Christchurch, April 21. excursion train at very cheifp rates' was 1 run yesterday to Waikari line, which was opened on Alonday. The terminus is just under 50 miles ./from- CJwiptchurch, and the newly opened section runs through the famous AVcka Pass. An extraordinary number of people took advantage of the cheap 4-ates, and the consequence was that though extra carriages were put on, some of the wayside passengers bad to be refused, and another train will be' run to-day in order to serve,them ; three engines were used on tire incline through AVeka Pass. There were 850 passengers on board.
Another Aurora was visible last /night/but not so brilliant as the one ou Alonday night.
