A numerous and influential deputation of gentleman indentified with Australian interest waited on Lord Kimberley, Secretary of State for the Colonies, in reference to the duties on Australian wines imported into England, and urged the expediency of reducingthe duties. Messrs Holland, M’Arthur. and Stanley Hill were amongst those who spoke on the question. Their representations were well received, and a favorable decision is expected.
TOLOGA BAY. [from a correspondent]. April 15th. A great deal of confusion, and consequent bewilderment and inconvenience to the public exists here with reference to the now pending sitting of the R.M.’s Court. It was originally fixed for the 11th inst., but as the R.M. was required as Coroner at Wai-o-matu-tini, it was put off. The clerk, in obedience to instructions, adjourned the Court to the 25th inst., and parties were duly notified to that effect. However, an official notice appears in the Gisborne papers adjourning the Court till the 19th. People are thus in a maze of wonderment as to what is to be the day. A good heavy calendar of civil cases are booked for hearing, and the Court will probably take two days. The excitement consequent on the races has fully subsided, and we all here do went something doing to keep us from getting “ blue mouldy ” —not, Mr Editor, by any means that we want a “ bating.” Easter week seems fairly over, and its rains are over too. This is decidedly the pleasantest season for many years as regards abundance of grass. The proverbial “ oldest inhabitant ” cannot recollect any year at all equal to it for grazing amenity. The schooner Gisborne lay in our placid bay from the 11th to the 13th inst., en route from Gisborne to Auckland and intermediate stations, and after landing storekeepers’ stocks, and shipping grass seed and other produce, sailed northwards. The s.s. Rosina came in here on the 12th, and landed many stores which had been on board for several weeks, and which were much “ wanted ” by our thirsty ones at the race meeting two days previous.
