LORNE STREET HALL: BOXING CONTEST.

— The Hriv Zealand Herald says Mr I James Mace’s competition took place I last evening at the Lorne-street llall. The building was crowded, there being scarcely standing room. The entertainment opened with a “set to” between Mr Fred. Edmunds and a native named Ngapni, which created roars of laughter, the native appearing to be somewhat out of his element, although he had evidently studied the art a little. The first couple for the competition who were both lightweights, were Messrs. Donovan and Banks. There was a great difference in the size of the combatants, Banks not being much over (Ist. weight, whilst his opponent was very nearly twice his size. The first rounds were slightly in favour of Banks, but in the fourth and last round the heavier man had the best of it, and was declared winner of his heat amid loud applause. The second couple for honors were Messrs. Morris and Murphy. This was a pretty evenly contested heat. Murphy at last was declared winner. The third contest was between Messrs P. Barry and Tom Codlin. On the judges being unable to decide, another round was called for, and Barry refusing to come forward; Codlin was declared winner. The heavy weight division commenced with Messrs. Mick Kirby and Ngapni, the native, which resulted in a very easy victory for Kirby, who won his heat in one round. Messrs Keesing and Tom Brennan, of Onehunga, were the next to appear, and caused a great deal of excitement. Very hard hitting was indulged in by both men. Keesing appeared, however, to win the heat without being much fatigued himself. Mr James Mace next appeared with his belts, &c., and had a light spar with Professor Davis, and afterwards with Fred Edmunds. The winners of the various heats will appear, and spar off on Saturday next, when the winners will be presented with the prizes.
