The prisoner William Hart, who was convicted on a charge of rape on a little girl at the last session of the Supreme Court, underwent his first lagging in gaol this morning. Cliarics James Ihinnett, convicted of attempted rape on a child, was also Hogged this morning. The punishment inflicted in each ease was deservedly severe. Christchurch, April 17. Sir George Grey telegraphed to the Christchurch Tinies denying the statement that he had telegraphed to a friend ai Christchurch to the effect thal the Governor hail asked him to form a Ministry, and he was prepared to do so. Masterton, April 8. A young Swedish engineer named Charreder, who has but recently ar rived here, shot himself through the forehead with a double-barrelled pistol near Mauriceville last evening. His death was instantaneous. Auckland, April 17. Volunteer Land Claims before the Royal Commission numbered 1,500. About one in 75 have been granted. The Commissioners leave for Taranaki on Tuesday, and proceed to Wanganui. Invercargill, April 17. The Maid of Otago on arriving from Dunedin broke her cable and ran into a bridge over the Aparama river at Riverton, the vessel is much injured and is nearly full of water. The greater portion of. the cargo will be damaged.
