Among the list of passengere arrived by the Arawata, we notice the name of Mr F. J. Piesse, who has been making a tour of the Au; • tralian Colonies. The playing of the Band of J Battery, N.Z.V.A., at the Roseland Encampment on Easter Monday, elicited much deserved admiration from visitors. Mr. W. C. Walsh, of Makaraka, kindly presented them with £5 as a token of his appreciation of their merits. Mr. James Scott, of the Roseland Hotel, also presented them with £1 for the same reasons. We hope that such generous examples will meet with many followers. The Southern Cross Petroleum Company is making good progress with their shaft which is contracted for by Mr. J. R. Davis to go to the depth of 200 feet. Thirty-four feet have been sunk, and at 13 feet the overseer reports that a vein of paraffin was cut through. The sinking is now in hard papa clay which is likely to stand very well. We understand that the Directors have not decided how they will proceed with the exploration after the 200 feet has been attained, but will judge of the best means when they are better acquainted with the strata. Knowledge of the latter is far more completely rendered by the shaft work than by the boring tools. In the Resident Magistrate’s Court yesterday, Lizzie Anderson pleaded guilty to being drunk on the 6th inst., and was fined 10s and costs, or in default 48 hours’ imprisonment with liard labor.—Henare Pirito, charged wit a breach of the peace, was fined 10s and costs, £3 19s.—Esther Thomas, charged with drunkenness and indecent, exposure, was sentenced to 14 days’ imprisonment with hard labor, and to pay 2s costs, or 4 days’ extra imprisonment.— Henare Turangawas mulcted in £2 2s, or 4 days, for drunkenness on the 11th inst. ; and Hare Heipoto was fined 10s and 2s costs or 24 hours with hard labour for a similar offence.
