From a Dunedin paper we learn that Mr. J. P. Hydes, the well-known actor, is delivering a series of lectures in the Queen's Theatre, on his stage experiences of thirty years’ duration. It is spoken of where it has been delivered as being of a most amusing and interesting character. The New Zealand Times says:—A project is on foot in Victoria to form a Company for the purchase of desirable station properties, also for the purpose of taking up new lands for wool growing. The object of the Company is to enable persons of limited means to invest a portion of their money in the production of wool. The capital of the proposed Company is a million sterling, in 200,000 shares of £5 each, the first issue to be 50,000 shares, of which 30,000 have been already applied for. The prospectus is very favorably regarded. The Wanganui Chronicle relates that recently Major Kemp sent a meaenger, with a party of 100 men, to the Tuhua country, where Moffatt was murdered, and|demanded the surrender of the murderers, telling his hearers that “ the law never dies that, sooner or later, they would suffer for it if they continued to shield these men ; and that not improbably, if they continued obstinate, the Government would confiscate their land. Ono chief seemed willing to make the surrender, evidently influenced by the intimation that the Government could enter the Tuhua country with an armed force by way of Taupo. Other chiefs refused their assent, saying they would rather fight if necessary. Kemp’s emissary, however, obtained the names of three men who were personally concerned in the deed, vis., one who shot Moffatt, one who cut off his head, fsmashed it, and threw it into a pit; and one who dug out Moffatt's heart, and (as the messenger believed) eat it, as was done by Titokowaru on a like occasion. The following appears in the London Times of the 27th January : —“ On the recommendation of the Lords of the Admiralty, the silver medallion of the Royal Humane Society has been unanimously voted to Lieutenant T. P. Trench, of Her Majesty's ship Miranda, for saving life under the following circumstances : When off the Island of Upolu, Samoan Group, the vessel going at the rate of four and a-half ■ knots an hour, under steam, Albert Billett, whjjLengaged in securing the anchor, fell overboard, and being unable to swim was in imminent peril. A cry of ' Man overboard ’ being raised, Lieutenant Trench, without a moment’s hesitation, jumped off the poop, a height of 15ft., into the sea, swam to the man, and supported him until the ship’s boat picked them up. Both were then very much exhausted, and it should be added that the danger incurred was very great, from the fact that numerous sharks were observed surrounding the vessel both before and after the occurrence.
